ChainBreakers Recovery and Shed
Telopea Church of Christ

ChainBreakers project is focused on a target group of ex-prisoners who reside in the Telopea (Sydney Metropolitan) area. The program provides an environment for ex-offenders to learn employment, relational and social skills in a non-threatening environment. It also includes case management and life coaching by qualified staff as well as group work. Our objective is that Service Users have the opportunity to learn self worth and begin to feel accepted by their community and themselves.
The Shed component of the program engages a skilled tradesperson to teach clients employment and practical skills (TAFE qualifications) and provide further opportunities for positive mentoring relationships with other volunteers from the community.
ChainBreakers sponsored a TAFE certified White Card course to assist the service users in obtaining future employment (mandatory for construction work).

We continue to enjoy success with referrals from Drug Court and Justice Health, enrollments with TAFE Outreach plus men regularly attending the Shed weekly.
We were contacted by a service users parole officer who asked how we thought her client was going at the Shed. We told her that he always turned up, was always on time and engaged in the activities in a positive way. She informed us that this had been the longest time that he had managed to stay out of trouble and abstained from his drug of choice. When talking to him the other day at smoko, our project coordinator (paul) asked him if he enjoyed coming to the Shed. He said that he loved it and that it made him feel good about himself. He could walk away from the day knowing that he contributed to something worthwhile.
